Is Pumpkin Good for Breastfeeding?

Before you head straight to the recipes, we should absolutely address the important question for this post, does pumpkin increase breastmilk?

Let’s look at some data from reputable sources to see what we can find out about pumpkin being good for breastfeeding.

According to Kidspot.com.au, folate and vitamins are an essential part of a breastfeeding mom’s diet. Pumpkin happens to be rich in Vitamin A, along with dark green and yellow vegetables such as carrots and broccoli.

Maybe the next lactation recipe round-up should feature carrot? Hmmm…

Does Pumpkin Increase Milk Supply?

Not only are pumpkins a unique and adorable vegetable that bring millions of us joy, memories and fun during the Autumn season, they may also have some pretty remarkable effects on a nursing mother’s milk production.

As seen in the digestible.com, a blog by San Fransisco State University’s Nutrition and Dietetics program – pumpkin has been linked to increasing milk supply in some nursing mothers.

There you have it mama, pumpkin does seem to increase milk supply for some, now you have even more of an excuse to indulge in this season’s staple!

Easy and Fast Lactation Recipes

Now mama, don’t get mad when your mouth starts watering and you begin wishing someone would just bring you a hot plate of pumpkin spice goodness.

If I could, I WOULD!

Having said that, some breastfeeding moms barely get a minute to sneak away to tinkle or shower, let alone bake up a Martha Stewart plate of anything!

If this is you, I’ll do my best to find you some lactation cookies and treats you can quickly whip up or buy pre-made.

Pumpkin Lactation Muffins Using A Mix

Muffins are a fantastic baked good aren’t they?

They can easily be grab-n-go, they are hearty, filling and can be healthy too! Say you’re not much of a baker though, but you really want to make some pumpkin lactation muffins.

Did you know you can make lactation muffins using a mix? Yep, that’s right!

To hack your own lactation muffins with a mix, add in 1/4 cup of ground flax or brewer’s yeast. You could also replace a couple tablespoons of the oil with flax oil.

This is no exact science, but I think you get the idea.

When adding extra dry ingredients to a mix, check to see if you should balance things back out with an extra splash of milk, oil or water.

The ingredients mentioned above are galactagogues.

I’m sure by now you know what that word means, but incase you don’t – they are basically any food or medication that stimulate the secretion of a mother’s milk.

Such as these foods:

  • Oats
  • Yams
  • Nuts
  • Dark Leafy Greens
  • Fennel

Best Lactation Cookies to Buy

Here again is another lactation treat so worth baking yourself. Ahhh, the way the house smells from a fresh-baked batch of cookies – so yummy!

However, you’re a busy mama, and even though we all aspire to that Stepford title (sarcasm) baking homemade cookies may not be on your breastfeeding and pumping schedule for the day.

Your next best option is to buy lactation cookies. Now, you can still get a mix and bake them for that amazing in-home bakery smell.

Or, you can get these popular Milkmakers Lactation Cookie Bites in a bag from Amazon.
